Part 19 - Chapter 1 - Family Ties

Amanda hopped across the room, putting on her second shoe as she answered the ringing telephone. "Hello?"

"Amanda? This is Vanessa."

"I told you, I don't want to talk to you," she said and hung up the phone before walking back into the bedroom to finish getting ready for work.

"Who was on the telephone?" Andrew called out from the bathroom.

"No one."

As Andrew walked back into the bedroom, he heard the telephone ringing again. He looked at Amanda who was checking her make-up in the mirror. She seemed to be deliberately ignoring the sound.

"You aren't going to answer that?"

"I don't have to. It's a wrong number."

Andrew looked at her curiously, before going into the living room to answer it himself. "Hello. Oh, hi Vanessa." He looked at Amanda critically as she walked into the room. "What's going on?" he asked cheerfully into the telephone.

On the other end, Vanessa replied. "I just heard some news about Alma, I thought your wife might like to know about."

"She's right here, I'll put her on." Before he could hand over the receiver, Amanda turned away from him and went into the kitchen.

"No, don't bother, Andy. Just give her this message for me, will you, hun?"

Furiously scrubbing at the burners of the stove, Amanda didn't look up when her husband entered the kitchen. "Before you say anything, I don't want to hear it."

"Your sister's getting married today."

"She's not my sister."

"Not Vanessa. Alma."

"What?" Amanda dropped her sponge on the stove top and turned around. "Today? She only just got engaged . . . And she told . . . that woman and not me? How could she?"

"Calm down," Andrew said. "Alma didn't tell Vanessa, Dr. Wilton did. He thought Alma's family should be there to see her get married and he had Vanessa's number."

"Oh . . .but still, how could Alma run off and get married without saying anything to her own sister?"

Andrew shrugged. "Vanessa said to meet them at the courthouse at noon if you want to be there. If you don't want to, you can just tell them we were too busy at work to get away."

Amanda sighed. "I guess we really should go. I would feel awful if I missed my only sister's wedding . . . When we get to the office, I'll check the appointment book and rearrange things so we can take a long lunch."

Andrew frowned as Amanda walked away, realizing he just lost his own excuse to not go to the wedding.

Craig hugged Lucy close as they said goodbye in the doorway. "Are you going to miss me?"

"You aren't going to be gone that long," Lucy said. "But, yes, I'll miss you."

"Being away from you for any amount of time is too long." He kissed her.

Before things could go any further, Lucy pulled back. "If you keep this up, you'll miss your flight."

"You're right. You're always right . . . I don't suppose you'd want to come with me."

"I can't, I have too much to do here. I have schoolwork, the baby . . ."

"Bring them with you."

"And," she continued. "I've got to go by the country club and help manage the programs there. I can't bring the country club with me."

"You can't? Maybe you could call in sick," he suggested, holding her closer.

"No," Lucy shook her head, fighting to resist his charms. She pushed him away playfully. "Would you just go already?"

"Alright. I'll be back soon. I love ya, babe."
