Part 19 - Chapter 6 - Family Ties

As soon as he returned to the office, Andrew went straight into his office and closed the door behind him. He had spent half of the car ride back from the courthouse listening to Amanda fume about Vanessa. She only stopped complaining when he suggested she give it up and accept that Vanessa was a part of her life. Then they spent the rest of the trip in an icy silence.

He sat down at his desk and focused on his paper work, trying to forget about his family problems for awhile. As he flipped through the pages, he noticed something wasn't right. There was a discrepancy, one he was sure didn't happen on it's own.

Cassandra lingered in the darkened doorway while Blaine headed straight for the filing cabinet. So far everything was going according to plan. The door had been unlocked when they arrived and not a soul was in sight when they were sneaking through the hallway. As long as they were careful, everything would work out alright. She was certain of that.

She looked up as Blaine rattled the drawer of the filing cabinet.

"It's locked," he sighed.

"There should be a key somewhere," she whispered. "Look in the desk."

Blaine opened the top left hand drawer and found the key almost immediately. As he opened the filing cabinet and began thumbing through the files, Cassandra gradually made her way towards him.

"Ah, here it is," he whispered. "Burroughs, Reese."

As he picked up the file and began to open it, Cassandra suddenly pushed the cabinet drawer shut.

"Someone's coming," she hissed.

Blaine stood still, listening. "I don't hear anything."

Desperately, Cassandra looked around the room for a hiding place. Grabbing Blaine by the arm, she ducked down behind the desk, pulling him along with her.

No sooner were they out of sight than the office door opened and a beam of light from the hallway shined into the room.

They held their breaths as someone called out, "Hello?" and waited. A moment later the office door closed again and they heard footsteps moving away down the hall.

Blaine started to stand up, but Cassandra held him back. She motioned for him to stay still for a moment, while she tried to gauge whether or not it was safe to move from their hiding place. She wasn't eager for him to move away from her, but she knew it was time for them to go. She nodded and let go of his arm.

"It's safe now. Let's get out of here."
